Pacific Rim was released back in 2013 and earned only $101 million in North America. A strong Chinese release propelled its global haul to a slightly stronger $411 million worldwide, but it was still far from the hit Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures expected at the time.

Regardless, a sequel is still in the works, and while Guillermo del Toro won’t be at the helm, the movie is so far looking pretty good. After all, it’s going to be directed by Daredevil’s Steven S. DeKnight, and the cast is so far made up of names like John Boyega and Scott Eastwood. The former actually took to Instagram to reveal the start of production and title earlier today, and we know that that it will indeed end up being Pacific Rim: Maelstrom.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Boyega is playing the son of Stacker Pentecost (Idris Elba), but beyond that, plot details have been kept a closely guarded secret. All we know for sure is that Universal Pictures is set to release Pacific Rim: Maelstrom on February 23rd, 2018.

Pacific Rim: Maelstrom is based on the world created by Guillermo del Toro and Travis Beacham and comes from a script by Jurassic World co-writer Derek Connolly. That alone gives us reason to be excited, so here’s hoping we saw more from the sequel soon.
