Apocalypse is one of the most famous and beloved X-Men villains of all-time, and he will finally make his big screen debut 16 years after the release of the first X-Men movie in 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse.

Bryan Singer returns to direct, while the main cast from the last two movies (which includes the likes of Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, and Jessica Lawrence) will all return. A number of new characters will also be seen in the 1980s set sequel, including younger versions of Cyclops, Jean Grey, and Storm!

There’s been a lot of talk about who should play Apocalypse, especially as he’s not the easiest villain to imagine being brought to life on the big screen. How he’ll be portrayed – be it with a radically different appearance or through the use of special effects and motion capture – isn’t clear as of right now.

Regardless, Singer has chosen an actor to play Apocalypse in the next X-Men movie, and it’s Inside Llewyn Davis star, Oscar Isaac! By the time this is released, audiences will be even more familiar with his work as Isaac is set to appear in a leading role in J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens in 2015.

Others being looked at for this villain included Idris Elba (Luther) and Pedro Pascal (Game of Thrones). Isaac is an interesting choice though, and it’s easy to imagine him bringing something really special to this iconic X-Men foe. X-Men: Apocalypse is currently set to be released on May 27th, 2016.
