With J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: The Force Awakens in post production, attention is already turning to the Rian Johnson helmed Star Wars Episode VIII (set for release in 2017).

According to The Wrap, Gina Rodriguez (Jane the Virgin), Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black), and Olivia Cooke (Me and Earl and the Dying Girl) are among those being considered for the lead female role in that movie. It’s still said to be early days in the casting process, but this trio are considered the top contenders and will read with John Boyega later this month.

Benicio Del Toro meanwhile is now said to be close to finalising his deal to play the villain.

Interestingly, Maslany was one of the finalists for the lead role (since taken by Felicity Jones) in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, but whether that makes her a favourite here remains to be seen. Yet another female lead being added to the usually male centric Star Wars franchise is obviously very good news, and proves that Lucasfilm are very much prioritising diversity.

Variety reporter Justin Kroll has also revealed that 22 – 26 is the age range of actors that are being considered for the young Han Solo in his spinoff. No teens! Phew. Be sure to check out the latest images and footage from Star Wars: The Force Awakens by clicking here.
