Following the critical and commercial failure of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Sony were left with no other choice than to make a deal with Marvel which will see the team behind Avengers: Age of Ultron reboot Spidey and give him a place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (starting with Captain America: Civil War).

There have been some rumours about who will play the iconic character – who is heading back to high school – but now a shortlist of five has surfaced. Those are Nat Wolff, Asa Butterfield, Tom Holland, Timothee Chalamet and Liam James, among a number of others who have not been named at this point.

Spider-Man Candidates

Test offers should start going out next week with a decision expected in the next few weeks to coincide with Captain America: Civil War’s start date. However, the actor who plays Spider-Man apparently won’t be needed on set until June. These are all said to be strong contenders for the role, but test offers are pending.

Nat Wolff is best known for The Fault In Our Stars, Asa Butterfield is perhaps the most familiar face here after roles in Ender’s Game and Hugo, Tom Holland will soon be seen in In the Heart of the Sea, Timothee Chalamet appeared in Interstellar, while Liam James took on a leading role in The Way Way Back.

Drew Goddard is expected to write and direct Spider-Man’s next movie for a  July 28th, 2017 release.
