Olympus Has Fallen is the first of two movies coming out this year grounded in an attack on the White House. Gerard Butler is front and centre here for director Antoine Fuqua (Training Day), and the film promises to be a big spring blockbuster next month.
The first trailer landed earlier in the year, giving us a good first look at the action we can expect here. And earlier in the week, we saw the first character poster surface for Butler as our leading man. Now Yahoo Movies have released the second in the series, giving us a look at Aaron Eckhart.
“When the White House (Secret Service Code: “Olympus”) is captured by a terrorist mastermind and the President is kidnapped, disgraced former Presidential guard Mike Banning finds himself trapped within the building. As our national security team scrambles to respond, they are forced to rely on Banning’s inside knowledge to help retake the White House, save the President, and avert an even bigger disaster.”
Morgan Freeman stars alongside Butler and Eckhart, completing a promising leading trio. And joining them will be Ashley Judd, Radha Mitchell, Melissa Leo, Angela Bassett, Dylan McDermott, Robert Forster, and Rick Yune.
Fuqua is directing from a script co-written by Creighton Rothenberger and Katrin Benedikt, both making their debuts as screenwriters with Olympus Has Fallen.
Roland Emmerich’s White House Down will be following in similar footsteps a few months later, with Channing Tatum, Jamie Foxx, and Maggie Gyllenhall leading the summer action blockbuster. Both films will no doubt continue to be compared with each other in the coming months, and it will be interesting to see which comes out on top in audiences’ eyes and at the box office.
Olympus Has Fallen will be landing on 22nd March in the US, with its UK release date set for 19th April. Whilst we wait, here’s the latest character poster, which you can click through to enlarge.
