After Anna Kendrick mentioned in a recent interview that her brother had suggested she take on the role of Squirrel Girl in a future Marvel movie, social media inevitably started blowing up. Stranger Things star Shannon Purser would later express an interest in the role, while even Avengers: Infinity War directors Joe and Anthony Russo shared some love for the hero.

Now, word comes from TV Line that Marvel Television and ABC Studios are currently shopping around a twenty minute New Warriors comedy series to cable and online streaming services.

What does that have to do with Squirrel Girl? Well, the character will apparently be a big focus of the series which is described by the site as, “the junior version of The Avengers, the New Warriors are a superhero squad made up of teenagers.” That pretty much sums the team up, though they’ve had many memorable adventures over the years and even played a pivotal role in the Civil War comic book which inspired the movie released earlier this year.

The fact that New Warriors isn’t heading to a network like ABC points to it being a little more grown up in nature than Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the in development Damage Control, and that may be no bad thing. Throw in the fact that the series could introduce viewers to a new wave of great heroes – along with the fan-favourite Squirrel Girl – and this is exciting news!

It’s still early days for now of course, but stay tuned for further updates on New Warriors…
