Logan is just a couple of weeks away, but there’s thankfully still a lot we don’t know about the movie. Fox has been careful not to give too much away in the stylish trailers and TV spots, though a new video sheds some light on the origin story of the young Laura/X-23.

The disturbing footage shows the villainous Zander Rice experimenting on the child, and things culminate with Laura using her Adamantium claws to slice her arm open before her healing factor kicks in. If this is a taste of what we should expect, the Logan is going to take us to some dark places, something we’ve known for a while due to the movie’s R-Rating.

Unsurprisingly, that’s something Fox was worried about as Twentieth Century Fox Film chairman Stacey Snider explained in a recent interview about Logan’s tonal shift.

“Inside, there was real consternation about the intensity of the tone of the film. It’s more of an elegy about life and death. The paradigm for it was a Western, and my colleagues were up in arms. It’s not a wise-cracking cigar-chomping mutton-sporting Wolverine, and the debate internally became, isn’t that freakin’ boring? Isn’t it exciting to imagine Wolverine as a real guy and he’s world-weary and he doesn’t want to fight anymore until a little girl needs him?”

In the comic books, Laura grows up to be X-23 and the next Wolverine. What the future holds in store for her in this universe remains to be seen, though it’s widely believed that an older version of the character could end up making her presence felt in Deadpool 3/X-Force.
