Fox have released a new TV spot for Gotham titled “The Good, The Evil, The Beginning”. Though it doesn’t feature any new footage from the series, the creative new promo gives  us an idea of what to expect in terms of tone and the issues that the young Detective Jim Gordon will face when he returns to the city.

We get to see a number of characters here, with a lot of hints at their futures, particularly for Gotham’s early versions of Catwoman and The Riddler. Who could it be that’s welcoming Gordon back to the city though?

One villain we know it isn’t is The Joker, as an interesting report indicates that the series will very much take its time when it comes to introducing the Clown Prince of Crime.

In Alan Moore’s “The Killing Joke”, it was revealed that the villain was a failed stand up comedian before turning to a life of crime, though the authenticity of The Joker’s claims have since been disputed.

In the pilot, relative unknown Jon Beavers plays a not particularly funny comedian in Fish Mooney’s club, an indication perhaps that he could be the future Joker. Well, Gotham’s first season will apparently, “introduce a character that might be a future Joker, each emphasising aspects of the character’s iconography, a card sharp, a flower seller, a clown, or just a guy with a very big grin.”

Only one of these will end up being the actual Joker, and it’s this sort of guessing game which should play a big role in getting viewers to tune in to Gotham each week. The villain’s origin has always been shrouded in mystery, with the only confirmed aspect being that he took on the guise of the Red Hood beforehand and was transformed into The Joker when Batman knocked him into a vat of chemicals.

How much of this we will see explored remains to be seen, though it’s certainly an interest way of handling the introduction of one of Batman’s most iconic foes. What do you guys think?
