The first teaser trailer for Darren Aronofsky’s latest, mother! promises a chilling experience as we see Jennifer Lawrence slowly approach her door accompanied by sinister voiceovers.

We hear Lawrence ask “What brings you to us?” which must be addressed to a mysterious visitor. We know that the synopsis of the film is that a couple, Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem, are visited by uninvited guests who test their relationship and disturb their tranquil existence. Lawrence can be heard uttering more questions, such as “Who are these people?”, suggesting the visitors cannot be trusted and foreshadowing the hair-raising events to come.

We can also hear what may be some of composer Jóhann Jóhannsson’s eerie score in the background, which builds as the trailer become more intense. Jóhannsson has been involved with films such as ‘Sicario’ and ‘Arrival’ for which he provided suitably haunting scores. This is Aronofsky’s first film without his usual composer Clint Mansell.

The trailer becomes more intense in the latter half, most likely reflecting what the actual film will be like. The quick sequence of unsettling imagery along with Lawrence’s screams of “Murderer!” tell us how the situation will develop and hopefully what can be expected in the next trailer. As this is just a teaser, the first full trailer will be arriving on August 8.

Poster for 'Mother!'

‘Mother!’ is being publicised as a psychological horror by Aronofsky so may draw similarities to his film ‘Black Swan’ which earned critical praise and multiple nominations at the 2011 Oscars. The film also features an all-star cast with the aforementioned Oscar winners Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem, as well as Michelle Pfeiffer, Ed Harris, Domhnall Gleeson and Kristen Wiig.

Darren Aronofsky is adding to his varied and original filmography, from distressing drug-trips in ‘Requiem for a Dream’ to the biblical epic of ‘Noah’, now with the psychological horror ‘Mother!’ that will hopefully live up to his previous successes.
