Last week the rumour mill went into overdrive with the news of a number of high-profile remakes. This included The Wachowski’s The Matrix now seemingly ripe for a revisiting. This news sent the film community into a meltdown, questioning should they or shouldn’t they pursue this idea after its sequels (many) failings.

An update has since emerged from the mouth, or shall we say the fingers, of X:Men The Last Stand and The Avengers writer Zak Penn, who acts as the new film’s writer. The news of a reboot isn’t exactly true, and Penn took to twitter to douse the rumour flames and said,

“Can’t comment yet except to say that the words ‘reboot’ and ‘remake’ were from an article. Let’s stop responding to the inaccurate news. If I were going to recast Keanu Reeves, I would cast Keanu Reeves. Do I want to see more stories set in the universe of the matrix? Yes. Because it’s a brilliant idea that generates great stories. Look at what people are doing with Xmen universe. Between Logan and Legion and Deadpool, does anyone want them to stop? Not me.”

Michael B. Jordan - The Matrix

Another rumour to come out following Penn’s statement on expanding The Matrix universe is that his venture could very well see it developing into a prequel spin-off.  When the news of the “reboot” dropped, Creed actor, Michael B. Jordan was linked. Now with the idea that this could be some kind of prequel, it has now come to light that Jordan could very well play a younger version of Morpheus who was originally played by Laurence Fishburne.

With Penn’s mention of Legion and Deadpool paired with the rumour of Jordan coming in as a younger Morpheus could we now be looking at an Origin’s story for The Matrix? It’s certainly one possibility; the foundation of the story already exists from the trilogy that audiences heard about but never actually witnessed onscreen. Let’s hope this particular rumour mill starts producing some real hard facts soon.
