There’s been talk of a Flash Gordon remake for some time now, but the excitement surrounding the prospect of a reboot has been minimal to say the least. Well, that could all change with the news that Matthew Vaughn (Kingsman: The Secret Service) is apparently in talks to direct the movie featuring the iconic hero.

Twentieth Century Fox is developing the movie with John Davis and George Nolfi set to produce. Former Star Trek 3 scribes J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay wrote the script which was based on a treatment by Nolfi (The Adjustment Bureau). There’s currently no word on whether or not Vaughn would take a crack at the script.

Flash Gordon was created in 1934 by Alex Raymond. Since then, the adventures of Flash Gordon on the planet Mongo as he fights its tyrannical ruler, Ming the Merciless have been adapted in comic books, serials, and the cult favourite 1980 movie which featured music from Queen. Flash Gordon even inspired Star Wars!

Vaughn has shown himself to be a fan of comic book adaptations with the likes of Kick-Ass and X-Men: First Class, so a property like Flash Gordon is right up his street. It will also likely allow him more creative freedom than if he chose to work with Marvel or DC. After all, Kingsman has so far earned close to $400 million worldwide for Fox since being released back in February. Do you think he’s right for Flash Gordon?
