Sinister Six

One of the biggest questions about Sony’s planned Sinister Six and Venom movies is whether or not Spider-Man will somehow be involved in them. After all, a Sinister Six spin-off which serves as an Avengers-level event with Spidey battling six of his greatest foes sounds an awful lot more appealing than an origin story for the team!

Talking to HeyUGuys’ own Ben Mortimer at the world premiere of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 tonight, producer Matt Tolmach was quizzed about Spider-Man making an appearance in Drew Goddard’s Sinister Six, and his refusal to confirm or deny Spidey’s involvement may leave us with a lot to mull over.

“We’ll see. That would be an enormous spoiler I cannot give you. I’ll just say that anything is possible. That’s the fun of that, and that is what you see in some of those Marvel movies. Once you sort of decide to open up the universe, the rules go out of the window and you get to have fun. So, without actually answering the question, we’ll see what happens!”

After once again dismissing the possibility of some sort of crossover with The Avengers, Tolmach was asked whether we might see Sony also take advantage of any heroic characters from the Spider-Man universe who they hold the rights to. No names were mentioned by Tolmach unfortunately, but he was quick to emphasise that the two spin-off movies which are in the works won’t necessarily be all about the bad guys!

“If you look for example at Venom, I think knee-jerk people thing, ‘Venom! A villain!’ Really? Venom is a character who has this innate sense of goodness and justice, so there are lots of characters who can be a little bit of both. So, when you start talking about a Sinister Six movie, is it just going to be all bad guys? No. There’s complexity to all of them, and that’s part of the fun we’re having right now as we’re building it. Some characters are way worse – badder – than others. There’s a lot you can do. There are some guys who are redeemable, and some who are really horrible.”

While a heroic Venom is nothing new, some fans may not be too keen on any of the members of the Sinister Six being portrayed as anything other than the villains they truly are!

A recent comic book series – The Superior Foes of Spider-Man – has focused on a slightly more heroic version of the team, but with so many avid comic book readers desperate to see the likes of Doctor Octopus and Electro fighting side-by-side to take down Spider-Man, Sony many be better off having the iconic Marvel superhero make an appearance!
