Mark-Romanek-in-talks-to-direct-Boston-StranglerIn a move that would see him return for his first feature since his acclaimed 2010 adaptation of Never Let Me Go, Mark Romanek is in talks to direct Boston Strangler for Warner Bros.

Casey Affleck is attached to star in and produce the crime drama, based on one of the most notorious serial killers in US history.

The film will follow a detective trying to solve the case of a notorious serial killer in Boston in the early 1960s.

The setting is of course perfect for Affleck, who was born and raised in Massachusetts, and whose brother Ben Affleck has used the city as the setting for the first two of his three feature films at the helm, with Casey Affleck himself leading his brother’s directorial debut, Gone Baby Gone.

Chuck MacClean wrote the script after pitching the project to the studio, with insiders noting that the original pitch had similarities to David Fincher’s two crime-thriller/dramas, Seven and Zodiac.

If Boston Strangler is even remotely akin to those two films, then you can be sure it’s going to be a winner.

Affleck is riding high on praise for his joint leading role in David Lowery’s Ain’t Them Bodies Saints, and stars alongside Christian Bale in Scott Cooper’s Out of the Furnace. He’ll be finishing out the year with Christopher Nolan’s immensely anticipated Interstellar, and with Boston Strangler on the horizon, things continue to look good for years to come.

Romanek really made a name for himself beyond music videos back in 2002 with his sophomore feature, One Hour Photo, and returned eight years later with the brilliant Never Let Me Go. With Casey Affleck in the lead, this has definitely got a lot of potential, and here’s to hoping that Romanek’s talks will go well, and that principal photography won’t be far behind. More as we get it.
