A new report suggests the George Miller will return to his dustopian Mad Max saga sooner than expected, with a new film entitled Mad Max: The Wasteland. The rumour has it that the film, a prequel, would focus on Charlize Theron’s character Furiosa.

Theron’s character in Fury Road was undoubtedly part of the film’s huge success. During the long production of the Oscar-winning film Miller came up with many more ideas for the world, including a prequel centered around Furiosa.

Cinematographer John Seale, nominated for an Oscar for his Fury Road work, has talked about Miller being ‘pressured’ for another sequel. Seale has already read the script and has been talking to Miller about setting it up. This new report could suggest that pre-production has already begun.

In the past Miller has said that the lengthy production of Fury Road has made him reluctant to dive back in. Tom Hardy has also stated his interest in returning, although a prequel would surely exclude him from proceedings – are we then getting a Mad Max film with its eponymous hero?

With a part in the eighth sequel to the Fast and Furious saga in the bag, and a lead role in the forthcoming Diablo Cody/Jason Reitman film Tully in her future it could be that Theron has the time to return to the franchise. Fans would certainly welcome a new film set in the universe, however is a prequel the right direction to be driving towards?
