Snowtown and Macbeth helmer Justin Kurzel has been tapped to direct the upcoming big screen adaptation of Ubisoft’s hit video game series, Assassin’s Creed.

Kurzel is currently wrapping up work on Macbeth, starring Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard, and you can see the first still from that movie above (via Empire Online).

Assassin’s Creed would reunite Kurzel and the X-Men: Days of Future Past star, and the latter has been attached to play the lead for some time now. Tom Hardy is set to star in another Ubisoft adaptation, Splinter Cell. That movie will be directed by Edge of Tomorrow’s Doug Liman,

Michael Lesslie was most recently tasked to do a rewrite on the script, and the game’s story follows a a bartender who is captured by a secret corporation and sent back in time to relive the memories of his ancestors – all of them assassins – in order to retrieve some mysterious artefacts.

Ubisoft and New Regency had apparently considered a number of other filmmakers, including Daniel Espinosa and Garreth Evans. Variety reveals that it was Fassbender who campaigned for Kurzel to get the Assassin’s Creed job.
