Lone-Survivor-PosterPeter Berg’s Lone Survivor will be landing an Oscar-qualifying limited release from Universal before the year’s end, and it’s going to be very interesting to see whether that early engagement pays off come January’s nominations.

The first trailer for the film arrived over the summer, which gave quite a clean early look at the film. But now the studio has launched the second trailer, via Apple, which is that much more promising, and shows that Lone Survivor could well be something of a contender in a few months’ time.

LONE SURVIVOR, starring Mark Wahlberg, tells the story of four Navy SEALs on an ill-fated covert mission to neutralize a high-level Taliban operative who are ambushed by enemy forces in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan. Based on the New York Times bestseller, this story of heroism, courage and survival directed by Peter Berg (Friday Night Lights) also stars Taylor Kitsch, Emile Hirsch, Ben Foster and Eric Bana.

Mark Wahlberg takes the lead in the film, based on real events, and he’s joined by a truly stellar cast, starring alongside Ben Foster, Emile Hirsch, Taylor Kitsch, Eric Bana, Alexander Ludwig, Jerry Ferrara, and Yousuf Azami.

Berg is directing from his own script, based on the best-selling book, Lone Survivor: The Eyewitness Account of Operation Redwing and the Lost Heroes of Seal Team 10, by Marcus Luttrell.

Lone Survivor will be getting a limited release in the US on December 27th before opening wide on January 10th, 2014, and will then be released in the UK on 31st January.
