Leonardo DiCaprio has taken some time off from acting recently (mostly to hang out with models), but with The Revenant set to be released this Christmas, he’s now setting up his next project with New Regency.

DiCaprio’s production banner Appian Way will produce The Crowded Room with the studio. The project is an adaptation of Daniel Keyes non-fiction book which focuses on Billy Milligan, the first person to successfully use multiple personality disorder as a legal defence. The actor has had his eye on this role since 1997.

He’ll play the man who was charged in the late ’70s with armed robbery and the rapes of three women. However, as he had been diagnosed with multiple personality syndrome, Milligan was able to convince the court that it was one of his alternate personalities who were responsible for committing the crimes, not him.

Among his 24 personalities were Ragen, a Yugoslavian communist blamed for that robbery, Adalana, a lesbian who took responsibility for the rapes, and Arthur, a proper Englishman. Seeing DiCaprio tackle all of these should be unique to say the least, but will the movie be an awards season contender? It’s hard to say.

Jason Smilovic and Todd Katzberg (who is also a writer on Todd Phillips’ upcoming Arms and the Dudes) are writing this latest version, and DiCaprio will produce alongside Jennifer Davisson and Alexandra Milchan.
