"21 Jump Street" Red Carpet Arrivals - 2012 SXSW Music, Film + Interactive Festival

It was revealed yesterday that Ivan Reitman had decided not to direct Ghostbusters 3, but had agreed to help Sony Pictures find a suitable replacement to helm the long delayed third instalment of the beloved franchise.

The past 24 hours has seen fans share all sorts of ideas about who should take the reigns, and as it turns out, two of the most popular suggestions are now in talks. According to The Wrap, The LEGO Movie’s Phil Lord and Chris Miller are currently having discussions with studio about helming the threequel.

Ghostbusters-III-MovieThis probably shouldn’t come as all that much of a surprise, especially after the popularity of both The LEGO Movie and action comedy 21 Jump Street. The sequel to that movie – 22 Jump Street – is set to be released in June. Reitman will stay on as producer, while production is set to begin early next year in New York.

The original Ghostbusters aren’t expected to have a particularly large role in this new movie, with only Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson currently expected to return. Bill Murray is still out as of now!

Lord and Miller seem like a fitting choice, and them being in talks for Ghostbusters 3 could explain why they won’t be returning to helm the follow-up to The LEGO Movie. What do you guys think?
