According to a story on NBC Miami we may see a Mulholland Drive sequel from David Lynch.

If you’ve been following our Twin Peaks Retrospective you will know that this week was the 20th anniversary of Twin Peaks first airing. Seven years after Twin Peaks ended David Lynch created a pilot for the same network for another series, Mulholland Drive.

Unfortunately ABC decided not to pick the series up but Studio Canal Plus later released the pilot (with some new footage and re-edited) as a feature film in 2001.

Lynch has stated in a lot of interviews that he likes continuing stories and this was something that originally drew him to episodic television. With so many unexplored characters and plot lines in Mulholland Drive there was clearly enough to develop an episodic television show but, alas, it was not to be.

A sequel, though, could give Lynch the chance to explore some of the ideas he had originally intended to be included in the Mulholland Drive TV show. Although the feature film version of Mulholland Drive had a closed ending it was certainly not conclusive and there are many avenues that a sequel could go down.

The quote from Laura Harring is suitably cryptic but sounds quite promising:

I’m very sure it’s coming, it’s being born… I cannot really tell you how I know.

This is pretty tantalising news for any David Lynch fan, like myself, and I will be keeping a close eye on any further developments in this story.
