Damien Chazelle’s Whiplash was a stunning film, and the writer/director proved himself capable of eliciting a career best performance from J. K. Simmons, winning him a Best Supporting Actor Oscar.

Chazelle’s follow up keeps a musical theme, but La La Land looks to be everyone’s tempo. The film brings together Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling (and Simmons who is sure to become the director’s talismanic cast member) to tell a delightful story of the burgeoning love between a Jazz pianist and a young actress.

The film will debut at Venice on the last day of August this year, and if this trailer is anything to go by it’ll be one of the cinematic highlights of the year.

Synopsis, 2, 3, 4…

Mia, an aspiring actress, serves lattes to movie stars in between auditions and Sebastian, a jazz musician, scraps by playing cocktail party gigs in dingy bars, but as success mounts they are faced with decisions that begin to frail the fragile fabric of their love affair, and the dreams they worked so hard to maintain in each other threaten to rip them apart.

Here’s the wonderful new trailer.
