We reported here, that along with developing Archangels and a remake of The Black Hole (as well as having first refusal on any further Tron sequels), Tron: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski was pitching Oblivion to Disney, an adaptation of a graphic novel he had written with Arvid Nelson.

Well, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney liked what he pitched and will now produce the picture, with Kosinski still attached to direct.

Sean Bailey, who is president of production at Disney, was one of the producers of Tron before moving up to his current exalted position and THR say that his relationship with Kosinski was key in securing the deal. Apparently, other studios were interested in the hot property, but Bailey wanted to keep it and Kosinski within the Disney fold.

Kosinksi wrote the script himself, with the aid of Arvid Nelson, and has been itching to get the film into production for years, but then Tron: Legacy came up so, for three years, he’s been busy shooting that.

Oblivion is a sci-fi romance about a soldier who works on a future-set earth, where the population lives above the clouds as a result of the surface of the earth having become uninhabitable. This soldier repairs drones that patrol the desolate surface and destroy savage aliens known as “Scavengers”, when a woman crashes to the surface in a craft and they set of on a journey of discovery and adventure.

THR say the deal is worth seven figures, one of the biggest of the year so far, which presumably means that is Kosinski’s pay deal for directing and co-producing. Disney obviously think he’s worth it.
