The past few years have seen Terrence Malick become something of a prolific director, having previously spent years between his films. Malick’s upcoming work remains elusive as per his reputation, but with Cannes getting underway this week, the first official image from Knight of Cups, one of the two films he’s most recently been working on, has debuted online.
FilmNation will be showing the first footage of the film to foreign distributors over in Cannes, and THR have given us this rather brilliant first image of Natalie Portman and Christian Bale, to help those of us who aren’t foreign distributors get an early peek.
The plot is being kept largely under wraps, but it’s thought that the film is about celebrities and excess.
Bale and Portman starred on set alongside one of the most substantial ensemble casts of all time, joined by Cate Blanchett, Wes Bentley, Imogen Poots, Joel Kinnaman, Teresa Palmer, Antonio Banderas, Freida Pinto, Jason Clarke, and Ryan O’Neal.
Whether all of the above make it to Malick’s final cut of Knight of Cups of course remains to be seen. But with this first image released, we can be pretty sure that Bale and Portman’s fates are secure.
Malick is directing from his own script, and is currently in post-production on the film, along with his other untitled project, which was notably filmed in part during the Austin City Limits festival, and boasts another awesome cast, also starring Bale, Portman, and Blanchett, alongside Ryan Gosling, Rooney Mara, Val Kilmer, Michael Fassbender, and Bérénice Marlohe.
How long it takes Knight of Cups to go from its Cannes preview this month to arriving in cinemas is currently anyone’s guess. But with a cast as impressive at it has, we’re hoping it won’t be long.
