Up until fairly recently, it was pretty easy to just roll your eyes at the prospect of Universal’s plans for a shared universe featuring their classic monster properties. However, it’s become apparent that they’re doing a lot more than just copying Marvel’s approach to filmmaking!

For starters, they’re in talks with Tom Cruise to take on the lead role in The Mummy, and following some very interesting reports about the studio possibly casting a woman as the movie’s titular villain, it’s been revealed today that Sofia Boutella is in talks for that role.

The actress stole the show in Matthew Vaughn’s Kingsman: The Secret Service as Gazelle, and recently landed a key role in Star Trek Beyond. Making The Mummy a woman is going to be very interesting, and Boutella is certainly an inspired choice to play the monster.

It’s thought that Cruise is going to end up taking on the role of a Navy Seal who has some sort of history with the titular Mummy, but neither he nor Boutella have officially signed on to star just yet. Jon Spaihts (Doctor Strange) wrote the screenplay, while Alex Kurtzman (Star Trek Into Darkness) will direct. The Mummy has been set for a March 24th, 2017 release.
