Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige made an appearance at a Q&A earlier this week to mark the release of Avengers: Age of Ultron on DVD and Blu-ray, and he of course talked all things Phase 3. Kicking off with Captain Marvel, he revealed that while they’re actively working on developing her movie, we shouldn’t expect a casting announcement this year!

“I think right now we’re scripting the film, figuring out who we want Carol Danvers to be, and really what the structure of the movie will be and what her part will be in some of our other Phase 3 films. And it would be next year that we start to really think about casting.”

That’s a wait which is going to feel like forever, but Feige did promise that we’ll be getting plenty of casting announcements for Doctor Strange and Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2!

As for Doctor Strange, the Marvel boss denied reports that they won’t be covering the character’s origin story (“Doctor Strange has one of the best, most classic, most unique origin stories of any hero we have, so why wouldn’t we do that?”), and had this to say about reports that Tilda Swinton may be playing The Ancient One as a man in the movie.

“We get an amazing actress to play an amazing character, and do it in a way that’s very unique and doesn’t fall into any outdated stereotypes that sometimes pop up in the comics from years past,” Feige explained about her performance. “It’s funny you ask ‘Will Tilda Swinton be playing a woman?’ and you ask it because she does an amazing job of being sort of ambiguous in terms of gender. I think you’ll see us playing it in ways that she’s played other characters that way. Clearly she’s a woman, but it is very ambiguous in her portrayal.”

As for Spider-Man, Feige was clearly enthusiastic about finally bringing the character into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and after pointing out that Captain America: Civil War will still very much be Cap’s movie despite the young hero’s introduction, he went on to talk in detail about where Spider-Man has been up until this point and how he’s going to fit into this world.

“It’s not about when you show up, it’s about what you do once you’re there,” he teased. “The most important thing as a standalone is relaunching Spider-Man in his own standalone movie with his own storylines that fits into this universe. That is job number one for us.” Feige continued: “The connectivity is great, but it doesn’t drive the train.” What do you think?
