By bringing back Norman and Harry Osborn in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Sony started retreading old ground already covered by Sam Raimi’s trilogy. While there are plenty of comic book fans who would love to see a new take on the likes of Venom and Doctor Octopus, it sounds like the Marvel Studios produced reboot (which is set to star British actor Tom Holland) will introduce moviegoers to a brand new Spider-Man villain.

There are after all plenty to choose from – he has the best rogues gallery in comics – and that’s something Kevin Feige pointed out in a recent interview when asked about Marvel’s plans for Spider-Man’s next movie.

“That’s the advantage,” he pointed out about the character’s “deep bench” of foes. “Right now we’re interested in seeing villains we haven’t seen before.” It sounds like whoever Spider-Man ends up fighting will be a lot more personal battle for the wall-crawler as Marvel don’t want a high school student to deal with the kind of world ending threats faced by heroes like Iron Man, Thor and The Avengers.

“What we wanted was a movie where the stakes could be as high as ‘This bad person is going to do this bad thing, and a lot of people could die’ OR ‘You don’t get home in time and your aunt is going to figure this out, and your whole life is going to change.’ Particularly at that age, in high school, everything feels like life or death. The tests feel like life or death. Coming home from being out with your friends seemed like life or death.” The Marvel Studio boss also promised that the movie will be heavily influenced by John Hughes.

“It’s the soap opera in high school, and those supporting characters, that are interesting. Just as we hadn’t seen a heist movie in a long time, or a shrinking movie in a long time, we haven’t seen a John Hughes movie in a long time. Not that we can make a John Hughes movie – only John Hughes could – but we’re inspired by him, and merging that with the superhero genre in a way we haven’t done before excites us.”

There are those who have been concerned about Spider-Man heading back to high school, but with Marvel’s Kevin Feige in control, it definitely sounds as if that period of Peter Parker’s life will finally be done justice.
