The Flatliners reboot begins production in Toronto later this week, and it has now been revealed that one of the most iconic original cast members is set to return to the franchise.
Despite starring in new ABC series Designated Survivor, 24 alum Kiefer Sutherland has managed to find a space in his schedule to take on the role of a “seasoned doctor” in the movie. He joins a cast which includes Ellen Page, Diego Luna, Nina Dobrev, James Norton and, Kiersey Clemens, and while his deal hasn’t closed, it’s thought he’s said yes to it.
In the original Flatliners movie, Sutherland starred alongside names like Julia Roberts, Kevin Bacon, and Oliver Platt. It revolved around a group of medical students who triggered near death experiences by stopping their hearts in order to see what happens on the other side.
Predictably, things go wrong, and while plot details about this reboot are being kept under wraps, it’s expected to follow a similar path (no doubt with some contemporary twists).
This new take is being directed by Niels Arden Oplev (The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo) from a script by Ben Ripley (Source Code). The movie is currently set to be released next year.
