John Wick was a surprise hit, earning a respectable $80 million on a $20 million budget. It’s not only been called not only one of the best action movies of all-time, but also a career rejuvenation of sorts for Keanu Reeves as he played a former hitman on a quest to take down the gangsters who killed his beloved puppy.

Lionsgate has today confirmed plans to produce a sequel to the critically-acclaimed breakout hit , confirming that Keanu Reeves along with directors David Leitch and Chad Stahelski as well as screenwriter, Derek Kolstad are set to return. John Wick 2 will once again be produced by Thunder Road’s Basil Iwanyk.

“With such tremendous fan and critical support for ‘John Wick,’ we knew that there was still so much more of this story to tell,” said Jason Constantine, President of Acquisitions and Co-Productions in a statement today. “We are thrilled that Keanu, David and Chad have re-teamed with us and promise to bring audiences even more excitement the second time around.” He will oversee the project alongside Eda Kowan at Lionsgate.

It’s going to be very interesting to what John Wick 2 focuses on, especially as the adrenaline-fuelled revenge and redemption thriller very much had a standalone feeling to it. Either way, this is still exciting news!

Lionsgate International will be selling John Wick 2 internationally at the upcoming Cannes Film Market.
