Karen Gillan is increasingly busy of late. The Scottish actress, known primarily for her time with Matt Smith’s Doctor in the guise of Amy Pond, has just completed the second of her Guardians of the Galaxy film as well as a leading role in the new Jumanji film with Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart. She starred in the underrated TV show Selfie, and has had small roles in films such as The Big Short and Ti West’s In a Valley of Violence. Now she takes on another challenge – her first film as director.

Tupperware Party, which she will star in as well as being the writer and director, is filming in Scotland right now, with Mt Hollywood Films producing. Gillan explains the film,

“Tupperware Party follows the story of a girl called Lucy who lives in Inverness. She is dealing with the suicide of her best friend.

“It is one year one on and she is having a really hard time expressing how she feels about the whole event. Her angst manifests itself in quite destructive ways.”

The BBC caught up with the director on set and quoted Andru Davies of Mt Hollywood Films on why Gillan was exactly the sort of film maker they wanted to work with.

“She wrote the script, she is directing it, she is the lead actress, it is female-driven and her partners are all women,”

With her first feature film Gillan is following other young actresses expanding beyond acting. Last year Talulah Riley released Scottish Mussel, which followed Natalie Portman’s A Tale of Love and Darkness from 2015, and perhaps the most well known of the recent transitions Angelina Jolie’s move to directing with By the Sea, Unbroken and In the Land of Blood and Honey.

Gillan also confirmed again that she will be returning for “a little appearance” as Nebula in Avengers: Infinity War, the first installment of the two part finale to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as we know.

We hope to hear more from Gillan the director, and will look to run the trailer for Tupperware Party as soon as we can.
