Joseph Kosinski has made a name for himself with sci-fi movies like Oblivion and Tron: Legacy, but he’s now set his sights on a very different kind of project. The filmmaker is said to be in early talks to take on Sony Pictures’ upcoming adaptation of Gran Turismo, the hit PlayStation video game series (which has no story).

The fact that there’s no real plot to adapt obviously gives Kosinski and those involved with the movie and awful lot of creative freedom. Details are few and far between as a result, but Kazunori Yamauchi, the lead designer of the Gran Turismo series, was quoted as saying it will focus on a video game player turned racer.

It sounds like the studio is keen on making Gran Turismo happen, and Dana Brunetti, Josh Bratman, DeVon Franklin, Elizabeth Cantillon, and Michael De Luca are all producing the video game adaptation.

The possible story mentioned above was from an earlier draft of the script by Alex Tse though, and the report mentions that Kosinski is now developing a new version which might obviously differ a great deal.

A racing movie like Gran Turismo may seem like a departure for Kosinski, but he’s been looking at doing this sort of project for a number of years. He spent quite some time developing a movie based on Go Like Hell: Ford, Ferrari and Their Battle for Speed and Glory at Le Mans, but that fell apart and the director moved on.
