Kong: Skull Island marks yet another interesting career move for John C. Reilly, proving himself to be one of the most versatile actors working today. Whether it be his collaborations with Paul Thomas Anderson, his comedies with Will Ferrell, or his deviation into dark dramas like We Need To Talk About Kevin. We were thrilled to sit down with the actor when promoting his latest project, where we asked him about his diverse range of roles.

“As much as people like to say that ‘my goal as an actor is to do this or do that’, the truth is, you’re fielding opportunities that are generated by other people,” he said. “So you can develop stuff on your own which I also do but for the most part you’re seeing whats coming your way and then you have to be careful what you choose because then that dictates the next thing that is gonna come your way sometimes.”

John C. Reilly - Kong: Skull Island“I’ve been really lucky to have a lot of variety in my career and different opportunities, and I’ve been really lucky that the audience especially is willing to see me as different thing, dramatic or funny or whatever”.

Tasked with providing this Jordan Vogt-Roberts endeavour with its comedic edge and the pathos that exists too, we asked about finding that balance, and also what the actor’s own luxury item would be if he, like his characters, was stranded on an island for three decades. We then tried (and failed) to get him to discuss Stan & Ollie or Holmes & Watson – but did manage to speak about Step Brothers, and whether he’s at all surprised at just how big a cult following the film has garnered.

Kong: Skull Island is released in UK cinemas on March 9th. You can read our review of the film here.
