Joel Edgerton has been one of the finest rising actors over the past few years. The Australian-born actor gave a powerful performance in the Oscar-nominated Animal Kingdom back in 2010, and was so good in last year’s Warrior opposite Tom Hardy, which itself has some Oscar buzz surrounding it in the current awards season.

What I hadn’t realised was that the actor is also a writer and a director, with two short films to his directing credits, as well as having written four shorts and one feature film. THR report that he’s now sold his latest spec script, One Night Stand, to New Regency, whose recent production credits include Love And Other Drugs with Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway (if you haven’t seen it, I recommend you rectify that as soon as possible), In Time with Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried, and the forthcoming Broken City with Mark Wahlberg, Russell Crowe, and Catherine Zeta-Jones.

“A drama with comedic elements, the script is described as an honest look at a man and a woman in the aftermath of a one night stand.”

Edgerton sold the script at the end of last year, and isn’t looking to star in the film himself, but has signed on as executive producer, so will no doubt have a hand in who will be cast. New Regency are said to want to move on the script very soon, and are planning to meet with directors in the coming weeks.

After his immense turn in Warrior last year, we can look forward to seeing Edgerton this year in Wish You Were Here (whose trailer landed last month), Disney’s The Odd Life of Timothy Green opposite Jennifer Garner (the trailer for which can be seen here), and then he’ll have a very busy December with Kathryn Bigelow’s untitled Bin Laden film released on 19th December and Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of The Great Gatsby following on Christmas Day – his involvement with the promotion of both films will no doubt need to be highly coordinated.

The Great Gatsby is in post-production now, and Bigelow’s film is set to begin filming next month, so hopefully he’ll have enough time in between to be involved with the process of finding the director and cast for One Night Stand.

I haven’t seen his first feature, The Square, but watching the trailer now (embedded for your viewing pleasure below), it looks as though he’s co-written a great film, under the direction of his brother Nash Edgerton. Impressive stuff. I may just have to import the Region 1 DVD/Blu-Ray from the States.
