With any future big screen adventures of Chris Pine’s Captain Kirk and the new (old) crew of the Enterprise looking unlikely, the sky’s the limit for a future for Star Trek on the small screen. CBS are looking for a huge hit from Star Trek Discovery despite the rocky start with the the departure of showrunner Bryan Fuller.

Gretchen Berg and Aaron Harberts are taking the helm for the initial thirteen episode run, and today it was announced that Jason Isaacs is joining the series as Captain Lorca. He’ll be in the Captain’s chair of the titular starship, alongside the cast already announced. This includes The Walking Dead’s Sonequa Martin-Green who will take her place on the crew as lieutenant commander Rainsford. Quite what this says about her future on the popular AMC show is anyone’s guess…

While Isaacs is the bigger name, he won’t be the focus of the series. This will fall to Martin-Green in a departure for the long-running franchise. We know that Klingons will be involved, and it takes places a decade before the events of the beloved original series.

They join Michelle Yeoh who was recently confirmed as Captain Georgiou, another Starfleet Captain in charge of the Starship Shenzhou, Also announced recently as part of the cast are Pan’s Labyrinth’s Doug Jones and Anthony Rapp. They will play Lt. Saru as a new alien species to the Star Trek universe. and Lt. Stamets, an astromycologist in the series respectively.

After a number of delays we’re hoping to get an idea of exactly when we’re going to see the pilot, and subsequent episodes. It’s a big world out there and any new Trek TV series has a lot to live up to.
