Superhero movies are taking over Hollywood, and while there were only actually four released last year, that’s still too many for some people. Many of those same people have been taking swipes at the genre during awards season, with Nightwatcher director Dan Gilroy making headlines for criticizing the “tsunami of superhero movies” during his acceptance speech at at the 2015 Independent Spirit Awards this weekend.

There were also a lot of digs made during the Oscars, despite the fact that a huge number of nominees starred in big budget comic book blockbusters (Mark Ruffalo, Felicity Jones, Michael Keaton, Emma Stone).

Not everyone is happy that the genre is being looked down on though, and Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn took to Facebook last night to defend the movies and those who make them. He makes some fantastic points in the statement below, especially in regards to the independent filmmakers who believe that they put more heart into their films than those who just have larger than life characters to play with.

Do you agree with James Gunn or are superhero movies taking over a bad thing for the film industry? As always, be sure to let us know your thoughts in the comments section below. Oh, and if you do so happen to be a fan of the ever growing genre, be sure to check out all of our comic book features by clicking right here!

Also below is our interview with Matthew Vaughn in which he shares his love of James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy and shares some similar thoughts on why comic book adaptations are actually so important. We also recently spoke to Matthew Vaughn for his movie Kingsman: The Secret Service who speaks on the same lines as Gunn. Check it out below.
