After helming Dallas Buyers Club (a movie which saw stars Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto both win Oscars), everyone wanted to know what director Jean-Marc Vallée would move on to. That was Wild starring Reese Witherspoon, and next up is Demolition, a movie which was recently moved out of awards season to a planned release date of April next year.

Regardless, it will still premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival and the first trailer has been released today, and it’s hard to unterstand why it isn’t getting an awards push!

In Demolition, Davis (Jake Gyllenhaal), a successful investment banker, struggles after losing his wife in a car crash. Despite pressure from his father in law Phil (Chris Cooper) to pull it together, Davis continues to unravel. What starts as a complaint letter to a vending machine company turns into a series of letters revealing startling personal admissions.

Davis’ letters catch the attention of customer service rep Karen (Naomi Watts) and, amidst emotional and financial burdens of her own, the two form an unlikely connection. With the help of Karen and her son Chris (Judah Lewis), Davis starts to rebuild, beginning with the demolition of the life he once knew. You can watch the first trailer for the movie below.
