Producer Jason Blum took criticism and lingering questions left by 2013’s The Purge as a challenge and determined to deliver a more expansive and satisfying Purge if he were ever to make a sequel. While set against the backdrop of the fantastical conceit of Purge Night – America’s cathartic tool for reducing crime and that peky growing population – The Purge squatted claustrophobically inside an armoured house. We sat down to speak with the man behind Blumhouse Productions ahead of the film’s July 25th release. Jason Blum’s micro-budget model for movie making has had a big impact on the industry. By sticking with LA locations, paying little or nothing to talent upfront and making pragmatic decisions about release mediums, he has helmed some heavy hitting franchises. Not least Paranormal Activity and Insidious. We discussed with him the notion of surrendering editorial control, of horrors lack of ‘credibility’ and which big studio screenplay he would steal under the rules of HeyUGuy’s Mild Purge!
