If the buzz is to be believed, Nightcrawler might just see Jake Gyllenhall pick up his first Oscar next year. Don’t believe us? In a new TV spot for the movie, it’s hailed as a “modern masterpiece” and “the most original thriller of our time”, so it’s clear that Nightcrawler has the makings of something very special!

Set in the nocturnal underbelly of contemporary Los Angeles, Nightcrawler follows driven young man Lou Bloom who is desperate for work. He soon discovers the high-speed world of L.A. crime journalism.

Joining a group of freelance camera crews who film crashes, fires, murder and other mayhem, Lou muscles into the cut-throat, dangerous realm of night crawling, where each police siren wail equals a possible windfall and victims are converted into dollars and cents. Aided by Nina, a veteran of the blood-sport that is local TV news, Lou blurs the line between observer and participant to become the star of his own story.

Nightcrawler marks the directing debut of Real Steel and The Bourne Legacy writer Dan Gilroy. His brother Tony is producing while twice-Oscar nominated DP Robert Elswit is on cinematography duties.

Also starring Bill Paxton, Rene Russo, and Riz Ahmed, Nightcrawler will reach UK cinemas on October 31st.
