As Inception reached 3 million worldwide, finally opening in its last international territory, Christopher Nolan opened up about video game spin-off plans.

“What we are looking at doing is developing a videogame based on the world of the film, which has all kinds of ideas that you can’t fit into the feature film. That’s something we’ve been talking about and are looking at doing long term, in a couple of years.”

Inception is only one of two 2010 movies to cling to the top 10 in the U.S. for ten straight weeks (an accomplishment it shares with only How To Train Your Dragon – esteemed company). Should Nolan return to Gotham city it is unsurprising that the studio is looking for other ways of milking the title.

While movies based on video games often take a lot of stick – mostly with good reason – it is also true that the majority of video games based on movies suffer a similar lack of quality. With Inception’s critical and commercial success, one can only hope that sufficient time is taken to break the mould.

Quoted as saying, “I did always intend for this film to give a mass audience a really entertaining experience, but my fear with the film was always that it would be misinterpreted as being overly cerebral or puzzle-like”, the director may need to find a balance should he wish to entertain the gaming crowd through 10+ hours of gameplay.

Variety had it first.
