It’s been another stellar year for the superhero genre in 2017 with many of the films released having great success – Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 and Spider-Man: Homecoming has flown the flag for the MCU (with Thor: Ragnarok still to come), while Warner Bros and DC Comics’ Wonder Woman has smashed records across the globe and has now become the biggest comic-book film of the year in the US.

So what’s next? With the aThormentioned return of the Norse God, we will soon get the long-awaited Justice League in November with the team-up of Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, The Flash, Cyborg, and Superman. Across at Dark Horse Entertainment, however, they are gearing up for the return of everyone’s favourite horned anti-hero with the news that the new Hellboy reboot, Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen is a few weeks away from filming.

Now The Hollywood Reporter says that American Gods and John Wick star Ian McShane is joining the cast as Hellboy’s adoptive father Professor Bloom – the role previously played by Sir John Hurt. The new film will see the hero “face off against medieval forces who seek to destroy mankind.”

Stranger Things star David Harbour is taking over the lead role from the previous incumbent Ron Perlman in the new film, with acclaimed filmmaker Neil Marshall (Game of Thrones, The Descent, Dog Soldiers) taking over at the helm after previous director Guillermo del Toromoved on.

The Hellboy series thus far has comprised of two films: the first, released in 2004, grossed around $99.3million while the 2nd film, released four years later, and brought in around $160million across the globe. A third film was mooted for a long time but the reboot was eventually greenlit.

Shooting on the film is set to start in September in the UK and Bulgaria with a release date set for sometime next year.
