The first look has debuted this week for John Cameron Mitchell’s sci-fi film How To Talk to Girls at Parties, with three teaser videos release ahead of its world premiere at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. The film is based on a short story by Neil Gaiman.

How To Talk to Girls… stars Elle Fanning (The Neon Demon, The Beguiled) and Nicole Kidman (Big Little Lies, The Killing of the Sacred Deer) in what is described as a “punk alien love story” and is set to debut this weekend over in Cannes. Ruth Wilson (The Affair) co-stars.

Here’s the synopsis from Cannes:

A story about the birth of punk, the exuberance of first love, and the universe’s greatest mystery of all: how to talk to girls at parties.

How to Talk to Girls at Parties takes audiences to an exotic and unusual world: suburban London in the late ’70s. Under the spell of the Sex Pistols, every teenager in the country wants to be a punk, including our hopeless hero Enn (Sharp). Crashing local punk queen Boadicea’s party, Enn discovers every boy’s dream – gorgeous foreign exchange students. When he meets the enigmatic Zan (Elle Fanning), it’s love at first sight.

But these teens are, in fact, aliens from outer space, sent to Earth to prepare for a mysterious rite of passage. When their dark secret is revealed, the love-struck Enn must turn to Boadicea (Kidman) and her followers for help in order to save the girl he loves from certain death. When the punks take on the aliens, neither Enn’s nor Zan’s universe will ever be the same again.

A24 is releasing the film in the US with StudioCanal UK in charge of Uk distribution – after the Cannes debut, we should get an idea on release dates, which you should be later this year. For now, enjoy the teasers:
