Fans sat nervously through Hannibal’s superb second season unsure of whether or not the show would return for a third year, but fear not, it will indeed be back on the small screen a little later this year!

There have already been some casting shake-ups; for example, it was revealed recently that Boardwalk Empire’s Michael Pitt would not be returning as the sociopathic and hideously scarred Mason Verger, with Joe Anderson (The Divide) stepping in to take over the role. The reasons for Pitt’s departure are unknown.

However, an even bigger casting addition has now been made to Hannibal in the form of The Hobbit Trilogy’s Richard Armitage, with the British actor signing on to appear in six episodes of the third season.

He’ll be playing Francis Dolarhyde (better known as “The Tooth Fairy”), the main villian of Thomas Harris’ Red Dragon. Armitage follows in the footsteps of Ralph Fiennes. This version is described as hulking serial killer with a set of chompers that would make the Big Bad Wolf a little envious…and a penchant for targeting entire households for slaughter. It’s going to be very interesting to see the actor’s transformation!

Hannibal also stars Hugh Dancy, Mads Mikkelse, and Gillian Anderson was has upgraded to series regular.
