It’s no surprise that Hollywood has turned to World Cinema for inspiration in recent years with the number of remakes getting more and more popular.

Whilst it remains to be seen how many of these remakes go on to succeed or stay true to their original story counterparts, we decided it was high-time we turned the spotlight onto the next wave of foreign films to grace our screens.

Synopsis: As a conceited scholar of the Ming Dynasty, Wei Yangsheng believes that since life is short, one should pursue the ultimate sexual pleasure as time allows. Wei Yangsheng encounters Tie Fei the Taoist priest’s daughter, Tie Yuxiang, on an occasion. With the former’s talent and the latter’s beauty, they fall in love at first sight, and Wei Yangsheng is later married into the Tie’s family. Yuxiang is elegant and courteous under the influence of her father’s faith, though her lack of passion cannot fully satisfy Wei Yangsheng’s sexual needs. His disappointment is no less than his affection for her.

Attenberg

Synopsis: Attenberg is about Marina, a young woman living in a small coastal town who is infatuated with synth-pop band Suicide and the documentaries of Richard Attenborough. Despite help from her father and close friend Bella she struggles to understand the rituals of human interactions, attempting to make sense of her relationships with the same detached manner demonstrated by her favourite naturalist. Filled with playful set pieces, deadpan humour and unexpected poignancy Attenberg frequently defies categorisation making it a standout film and a likely future cult classic.

Action king Arjun has a crucial role in the plot, while the rest of the strong ensemble cast includes Trisha as love interest Sanjana. Yuvan Shankar Raja’s rocking music has already been making waves – especially the song ‘Vilayadu Mankatha’, which is set in a Bangkok nightclub and was shot over four consecutive days. The rest of this top-notch entertainer was filmed on location in Chennai, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Macau.

Synopsis: Film about the mysterious supposed suicide of Polish artist Stanislaw ‘Witkacy’ Witkiewicz in 1939. In 1988 an exhumation proved that the supposed body of the painter and writer was actually the remains of a 30-year-old woman, and several new works of art attributed to Witkacy, as well as letters dated after his death, kept appearing over the years.
