Perhaps best known for directing a number of Downton Abbey episodes, The Book Thief marks Brian Percival’s sophomore cinematic effort. Based on Marcus Zusak’s beloved young adult novel, it follows the story of Liesel Meminger (Sophie Nélisse), a young foster girl who is sent to live with her adoptive family Hans (Geoffrey Rush) and Rosa (Emily Watson) in World War II Germany.

We sat down with the director ahead of The Book Thief’s UK release this week, and our conversation touched on why some segments of the book didn’t make it into the movie, working with composer John Williams, and the increasing appetite for literary adaptations.

The Book Thief opens in UK cinemas today!
