An item of news spread across the internet today which had the army of Guillermo Del Toro fans very happy indeed. It appeared that producer Don Murphy confirmed the rumours we ran last week that the long awaited adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness was to start filming in June with Tom Cruise as its lead. Alas, this is not to be.

io9 have subsequently updated their original story to tally with the report from HitFix that while Murphy and Del Toro are still working towards getting their film ‘up and running’  there is no start date set, neither has Tom Cruise officially signed up. Del Toro is working with James Cameron to bring Lovecraft’s celebrated novella to the big screen, and the prospect is an  exciting one, not least because it would mean Del Toro back to work on the big screen, having spent an age working with Peter Jackson on The Hobbit, which Jackson is now returning to direct.

While we keep our eye fixed on developments from Mountains the plot thickens on Del Toro’s next project. Deadline have an update on Pacific Rim, the Travis Beacham scripted project which is described everywhere as ‘tent-pole’ first and ‘Earth Vs. Monsters’ second – looks like it’ll work out well for Battle: Los Angeles right? Anyhoo, Del Toro is reportedly circling Pacific Rim and perhaps the chance to jump back behind the camera sooner rather than later will tempt him to shelve Mountains once again. I’m sure I speak for many of you when I say I just want to see his name flash up on the movie screen once again, it’s been far too long.
