Del Toro

It surprised everyone when Pacific Rim 2 was announced for a 2017 release, and while director Guillermo del Toro is currently hard at work on horror movie Crimson Peak and wrapping up new TV series The Strain, he has another small project that he’s lining up before the return of the massive Kaiju and Jaegers.

In a recent interview, del Toro confirmed that he intends to shoot a black and white movie before starting work on Pacific Rim 2. He’ll work on this “really, really bizarre” project between the pre-production and actual filming stages of that sequel, but was reluctant to reveal too many details about it.

“It’s a very small cast. I would love to have John Hurt, and there’s an actress that I have in mind that is not well-known but I’ve seen her in a short film. That’s all she’s really done, one feature and one short, but she has an incredibly interesting taste and I’m gonna try her out for the main role. There’s one great creature in it.”

Confirming that the mysterious project does indeed have a title, he added that he would rather wait until he has finished working on it before divulging too many details in regards to that and the story. “It does [have a title], but I find—I’d rather do the projects and then show them to people than talk about them. I think that it’s going to be a nice thing for people to know which one is it and where it came from when it’s a reality.”

Del Toro’s films have gained a cult following, with many fans still demanding a third Hellboy. Many of them were also clamouring for a Pacific Rim 2 despite the underwhelming box office result, and regardless of which of his past projects you’re a fan of, seeing this one come together should be very interesting.
