Patti Cake$ producer, Chris Columbus has finally finished his script for the third in the Gremlins saga, Gremlins 3, revealing the next instalment will be more twisted and dark than you have seen before with a minimal use of CGI for the franchise.

Whilst on the junket circuit for Patti Cake$, Columbus revealed the details to Slashfilm stating he is proud of the way the script has ended up.

I’m really proud of the script. It is as twisted and dark as anything, so we’ll see. It’s always a budgetary conversation when we’re going to shoot it. I wanted to go back to the really twisted sensibility of the first movie. I found that was a very easy place for me to fall back into and start writing again so hopefully we’ll see that movie soon.

With all the modern day technology available to create the furry cute yet ugly little beings, Columbus has assured fans that they will be sticking with the old school version of the creatures and using puppets.

“Oh, without a doubt, minimal CGI. CGI will enable us to remove wires and make the puppeteers lives a little easier.

The originally Gremlins made its first appearance in 1984 and was directed by Joe Dante, it told the story of a young man who receives a strange creature called a mogwai as a pet, which then spawns other creatures who transform into small, destructive, evil monsters. This story was continued with a sequel, Gremlins 2: The New Batch, released in 1990. Unlike the lighter sequel, Gremlins opts for a black comedy, balanced against a Christmas time setting.

Originally Carl Ellsworth (“Red Dawn,” “Disturbia”) was hired by Warner Bros. to pen the film which started out as a reboot until Columbus placed his magic hands on it turning it into a direct sequel. Columbus will be in the producer’s chair alongside Steven Spielberg, no director has been confirmed to helm as yet.
