While doing the publicity rounds for Universal’s Johnny English Reborn, which premièred recently in Sydney, Gillian Anderson faced the perhaps inevitable questions regarding the future of the X-Files franchise with definite optimism.

When quizzed by Australian breakfast-show Daytime‘s Kylie Speer, Anderson made it clear that the truth is still out there – and that she is finally ready to find it (via THR):

“I hope it will happen, there’s talk of it. I don’t know who’s writing it but I hear there’s something going on.”

Speer, meanwhile, elaborated in a tweet following the interview’s end.

“Just interviewed Gillian Anderson. She is super stunning in real life and said she hopes a new #X-Files 2012 movie will be out next year!”

When the last set of rumours were ultimately debunked by David Duchovny’s PR people, it was nevertheless clear that he was open to return. It looks like the feeling’s mutual, with Anderson even daring to look beyond the potential third instalment.

“I’ve always wanted to do a spoof of the X Files as a film. We talked about that for a long time but maybe after three features we could get to do a spoof feature.”

While the prospect of a spoof film might have even the most loyal of fan’s reaching for their alien colonisations, the consolation prize would obviously be a long-awaited conclusion to the cult convolution. With the show’s mythology having set a date with doom for 2012, it would be the perfect time to bring the series to a close.

With the clock ticking, however, only time – and perhaps Anderson’s PR – will tell if this is any more than wishful thinking.
