Suicide Squad is an unexpected part of the recently announced slate of Warner Bros.’ upcoming DC Comics adaptations, and it will follow Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016 with David Ayer directing.

In a recent interview with Ayer, the Fury helmer revealed some new details about the approach he’s taking to the movie. “’Fury’ whetted my appetite for a bigger canvas and this idea of world creation. You can do amazing things as a filmmaker if you have the proper tools, and those are time and money…I can say that it’s a Dirty Dozen with supervillains. Then I can ask the question, ‘Does a movie really need good guys?’”

That’s an interesting question, and one comic book fans are continuously debating following the announcement of both Suicide Squad and Sony’s planned Spider-Man spin-off, Sinister Six.

“I love the passion [comic-book fans] have for these characters and these worlds,” Ayer added, addressing the very vocal fanbase. “I think there’s something incredible about the comic genre and technology has finally caught up with pen and ink to render these fantastic worlds in a way that feels believable and visceral to audiences. It’s a secular religion in that regards. The mythology that these characters represent – the idea of them as fallen gods on Earth – is intriguing to me. I can’t wait to start exploring those corridors.”

The director was careful not to give too much away, but he’s saying all the right things so far and seems like a great fit for an adaptation of a property such as this one.
