DreamWorks’ How To Train Your Dragon was released to wide critical acclaim back in 2010, and took just short of an impressive 0m. at the international box office, as well as a slew of awards, sweeping up with ten wins at the Annie Awards, and a nomination for Best Animated Feature at the Academy Awards (which it probably would have won if it hadn’t been going up against Toy Story 3).

A TV series of the film was announced towards the end of 2010, and the first trailers for the show, Dragons, have now gone online, via Animatie.blog.nl and Collider.

Collider note that executive producer Tim Johnson spoke a little last year about wanting to keep the TV series in the same vein as the original film:

“We’re actually going a little darker, a little more dramatic, much like the film.  The goal was not to change it or lighten it for a TV series.  The goal is to stay true to it in a TV series and that was actually fairly changing.”

We don’t get a huge amount of darkness in these trailers, but maybe there’s more of that still to come, with the show airing on Cartoon Network in autumn this year.

The feature sequel to the original film is still on track and in development, so this isn’t serving as a replacement to that, but should give fans of the franchise plenty with which to keep themselves entertained until summer 2014, with How To Train Your Dragon 2 set to be released on 20th June in two years’ time, the second of what is set to be at least a trilogy of feature films.
