After EarthWith recent trailers for the similarly themed Oblivion with Tom Cruise as well as our first look at the next Star Trek film Columbia won’t be left behind quite so easily, hence the first look trailer for M. Night Shyamalan’s latest – After Earth.

Will and Jaden Smith lead us through this post-human Earth story or as the official blurb has it,

A crash landing leaves teenager Kitai Raige (Jaden Smith) and his legendary father Cypher (Will Smith) stranded on Earth, 1,000 years after cataclysmic events forced humanity’s escape. With Cypher critically injured, Kitai must embark on a perilous journey to signal for help, facing uncharted terrain, evolved animal species that now rule the planet, and an unstoppable alien creature that escaped during the crash. Father and son must learn to work together and trust one another if they want any chance of returning home..

This is clearly meant to be a Jaden Smith vehicle and I’m willing to bet that his father has an important role but one which isn’t on screen as much as we’re expecting. Shyamalan must be used to the doubters at the gate however each new film offers the opportunity to rein in the indulgences which have sunk many of his previous films. Take what you will from the trailer but there’s a distinctly Avatarian feel to it – even if this isn’t the case it’s a fairly obvious marketing strategy.

We’ll have the chance to see when the film is out on the 7th of June next year.
