The long-postponed Red Dawn remake was originally set for release back in 2010, but when MGM came into financial difficulties, the film was put on the shelf, like a handful of others.

The delay perhaps will have a silver lining, in that all of its leading cast have grown in recognition significantly in the years since, with Chris Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson, especially, rising in status following Hemsworth’s leading roles in Thor, The Avengers, and Snow White and the Huntsman, and Hutcherson’s in The Hunger Games.

After catching an early sneak peek at the trailer and two new images last week, we’ve now got the first official poster, courtesy of Yahoo Movies, and the first official trailer should be on its way soon.

“In Red Dawn, a city in Washington state awakens to the surreal sight of foreign paratroopers dropping from the sky – shockingly, the U.S. has been invaded and their hometown is the initial target. Quickly and without warning, the citizens find themselves prisoners and their town under enemy occupation. Determined to fight back, a group of young patriots seek refuge in the surrounding woods, training and reorganizing themselves into a guerilla group of fighters. Taking inspiration from their high school mascot, they call themselves the Wolverines, banding together to protect one another, liberate their town from its captors, and take back their freedom.”

The film has an impressive cast joining Hemsworth and Hutcherson, with Josh Peck, Adrianne Palicki, Isabel Lucas, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan completing the support nicely.

Long-time stunt coordinator Dan Bradley (the Bourne films, Three Kings) makes his directorial debut, directing from a script by Carl Ellsworth (Disturbia) and Jeremy Passmore (Special).

Red Dawn is set to hit US theatres on 21st November, and though there’s no UK release date set yet, we’ll no doubt be seeing it before the end of the year too. As usual with this first official poster, you can click to enlarge.
